The safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. To ensure a secure learning environment, we have established comprehensive emergency procedures. These protocols are designed to keep everyone safe in the event of various emergencies. Our routine fire drills prepare you to respond calmly and efficiently in the case of a fire, ensuring that you know the quickest evacuation routes and the importance of orderly exits. Evacuation procedures are not limited to fires; they may be necessary for other emergencies, and it's crucial to follow instructions from staff members during these times. Additionally, lockdown drills are conducted to prepare you for situations where safety requires you to stay in your classroom or another designated area. Please take these drills seriously and familiarize yourself with these procedures, as your knowledge and cooperation can make a significant difference in maintaining a secure environment for all students and staff.

Fires & Fire Drills

Fire evacuation routes and muster stations are posted next to the door of every learning space in the building. During a fire or a fire drill, students are expected to exit in an orderly fashion, following the posted route. Students will assemble quietly at the indicated muster station with their teachers. Students not in the classroom during a fire alarm should find their teacher outside as quickly as possible. Students on spare should exit the school and follow classes off-site.

Student Parking Passes & Parking Lot Expectations

At Crescent Heights High School, we understand that many of our students rely on personal transportation to get to school, and parking on campus is a privilege that we're pleased to offer. To ensure a safe and orderly environment in our parking lots, we have implemented a student parking pass system along with clear expectations for parking lot behaviour. These measures are not only about convenience but also about fostering a respectful, responsible, and safe school community. We believe that by adhering to these guidelines, we can collectively create a parking environment that is conducive to both safety and courtesy for all students and staff.

Parking Passes

Parking passes at Crescent Heights High School are awarded to the following students on a priority basis as limited spots are available: :

  • Students or siblings of students who have a physical disability
  • North Trail High School overflow students attending Crescent Heights High School
  • Students living outside of Crescent Heights Catchment Area in specialized settings and other programs

Students not in any of the above categories mentioned above may not be granted a parking pass. Any students parking in the Crescent Heights parking lot without a parking pass will be ticketed and/or towed. Passes are a privilege and failure to comply with parking pass contract or student code of conduct can result in loss of parking privileges. The cost of a parking pass is $50/school year.

Parking Lot Behaviour Expectations

The student parking lot at Crescent Heights has a series of behaviour expectations:

Clear Display of Pass: Parking passes must be clearly and fully visible from outside the vehicle.

No Speeding/Stunting: Drive responsibly and safely in the parking lot and the surrounding community.

No Loitering: Students are not permitted to congregate in their cars during class, spare periods, or lunch breaks. The parking lot is for parking and not as a social gathering place during school hours.

Efficient Parking: When entering the parking lot, find an available parking space and park. Likewise, when leaving the parking lot, do so promptly and without unnecessary delays.

Respect Parking Assignments: Park only in designated parking spaces. Do not park in spaces reserved for specific purposes, such as the community center or visitor parking

No Disruptive Behaviour: Refrain from excessive vehicle noise that disrupts learning and classroom engagement (honking, revving engines, etc.)

No Littering: Keep the parking lot clean by disposing of trash properly. Littering in the parking lot is not only unsightly but also disrespectful to the school environment.

Loss of Parking Pass: Failure to comply with these behaviour expectations or the general student code of conduct will result in the loss of your parking pass, which can remove students’ ability to park on campus.

Transportation

Crescent Heights High School students who are found to have invited persons to the campus who are not current students may face possible disciplinary action.

It is the responsibility of all CHHS students to act safely and responsibly on their way to and from school each day.  All students will be fully accountable for:

1. Their behaviour on busses while riding to and from school

2. Their behaviour while walking to and from school

3. Driving to and from school in a safe manner

Students will be fully responsible for their actions while travelling to and from school.  Failure to act in a safe, caring and welcoming manner may result in disciplinary action from the school authority.  School administration will also be in close contact with parents/guardians in an effort to keep all students accountable for their behaviour during transportation to and from school.

Visitors & Volunteers

Our school is a closed campus. All visitors and volunteers must report directly to the main office to sign-in. Students should not invite friends to visit the school. Individuals found on school property who do not have legitimate business with the school and who have not registered in the main office may be charged with trespassing while on school property.

Crescent Heights High School students who are found to have invited persons to the campus who are not current students may face possible disciplinary action.

Student Identification Cards (ID)

We will be taking student photos and developing student identification cards after the school year begins.  Students will be called out of class by last name on:

  • Thursday, September 4, 2025
  • Friday, September 5, 2025

If you are unable to attend student photo days, we will have a photographer here on Thursday, October 23, 2025 (photo retake day) for students who need this done.

Accidents

The details of any accident are to be reported immediately, either to a teacher or to the Main Office for appropriate documentation and/or communication.

Student Searches

The school does not assume responsibility for items lost or stolen out of lockers or tote-boxes. If a student finds that the locker is not working properly, it should be emptied immediately and the problem reported to the Business Office. Locker combinations should not be disclosed to others. As the co-owner of all lockers, the school reserves the right to enter lockers in case of emergency.

School Resource Officer

A member of the Calgary Police Service is assigned to CHHS to assist students in a variety of ways. These services can include legal advice, classroom presentations on numerous topics, and personal one-on-one counselling. Rather than an enforcement agent, this officer's main role is to assist students and to improve police and school communication.

School Evacuations

Students must remain under their teachers’ direct supervision. For example, during a fire drill they must stay grouped as a class so attendance can be taken.

Trespassing

At the Calgary Board of Education, we appreciate the broad diversity of friendships that students have with peers in other school buildings. However, each CBE School is a closed campus. This means that students from other schools, even siblings of current students, are not permitted to visit schools they do not attend. This also includes former graduates or non-student visitors without valid business to conduct on-site. If any of the above wishes to visit a school, they must check in with the administration at that school to request permission. Once they have received permission, they must check in at the main office and sign in as a visitor immediately upon arrival. This helps ensure the safe, welcoming, caring, and supportive learning environment that students, staff, and visitors can expect at each Calgary Board of Education site. Failure to abide by these expectations could result in a trespass warning or trespassing ticket from the Calgary Police Service at the discretion of the school's administration.

Visitors must report to the main office to obtain permission to be on the premises. Persons who are unlawfully on the premises will be charged with trespassing under the School Act of Alberta.

CBE schools are closed campuses and we strongly suggest that you discourage your friends from visiting you during school hours. Classes will not be disrupted unless there is a legitimate emergency. It is our expectation that Crescent students will not trespass at other school campuses during the school day.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
